CNY Girls’ Summit 2019 – 13 April 2019

Workshop topics have included paper-making and testing, watershed models, wind turbines, heart beat regulation, Science for Health and Life, coding, Scratch software, fermentation, environmental engineering, environmental health, ornithology, and more.

When: Saturday April 13, 2019, 9:30-3:45 (Check in, and on-site registration open at 8:30am)

Where: Marshall Hall and other locations at ESF and Syracuse University (GPS:1000 Irving Ave, Syracuse, NY, 13210, to get to the Traffic Control Station next to the CARRIER DOME, and follow the signs)

History at ESF

In 2015, in response to long-standing requests to the Women’s Caucus to extend the age range for Kids Day, and Girls Inc’s Youth Development team’s desire to find a permanent home for their established (but nomadic) program, the two groups partnered with ESF’s first Interim Chief Diversity Officer to plan and host a career exploration program for middle and high school girls right here on campus. In 2016, we were joined by staff in Outreach (now the Office of Experiential Learning and Outreach), C-STEP, and SU’s STEP program, and >90 girls participated in workshops and panels on both campuses! In fall 2017, Dimensions Mentoring program and our first official CDO joined the team to plan the 10th annual program in 2018, in which more than 100 girls participated!

Volunteer

Workshop leaders develop 45-minute hands on experiences to introduce some aspect of their fields. Group guides facilitate discussions, administer pre- and post-surveys and ice breakers, and get groups to where they need to be. Help is also needed during registration, data compilation for reporting requirements, and during lunch. Volunteers must register in advance in order to be screened per SUNY Child Protection Policy.

Central New York Science and Engineering Fair (CNYSEF) – Volunteers And Judges Needed

Greetings, fellow astrophiles – this in from the TACNY email list.

Volunteers and judges are needed for the Central New York Science and Engineering Fair (CNYSEF) sponsored by the Museum of Science and Technology (MOST) on Sunday, March 31, 2019 from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM (schedule) at the SRC Arena on the Onondaga Community College campus. This year, students from ten counties will compete in two divisions, the junior fair for 4th-8th graders and the senior fair for 9th-12th graders. Judges don’t need to be experts in science to listen as the students demonstrate how much they have learned and accomplished. A continental breakfast, lunch and training will be provided for the judges and volunteers. Those interested in volunteering can apply online here. The encouragement and interest shown by volunteers and judges is an essential part of the student’s science fair experience. Help inspire our future generation of scientists and engineers.

Second Annual CNY Innovation Challenge 2019

This in from the TACNY email list. Students, mentors, and judges are all welcome to take a look.

The CNY Innovation Challenge aims to spark ideas to develop groundbreaking products or services and to foster entrepreneurship. We know that students have really good ideas that could turn into great inventions and this challenge has been designed to help guide those ideas from concept to completion. The process includes a crucial step – documenting intellectual property to protect concepts that could be used in a patent application. Teams will learn strategies to advance their idea and take a product/service to market. In addition to designing and developing an idea, you will need to have a solid go-to-market plan and a marketing pitch to “sell” your concept. See full rules.


The Challenge is open to students in grades 6-12. There will be winners in two brackets: high school (grades 10-12) and middle school (grades 6-9). Teams need to have a minimum of two students and a maximum of four. Top team prize for the high school category is $1,000 and top team prize for middle school level is $500. Additional prizes will be determined based on the number of entries overall.

Syracuse University’s 2019 Summer Engineering Research Internship Program For High School Students

This in from the TACNY email list – an excellent program for your consideration and/or passing along to perspective summer researchers.

Syracuse University’s School of Engineering and Computer Science has created engineering research opportunities for local talented rising high school seniors. This six-week program begins June 27 and ends August 9, 2019. Students will work 25 hours/week directly with SU research professors and graduate and undergraduate students on a specific research project. Their summer work will conclude with a presentation at a poster session. Selected students will be given a stipend for their work. Interns will be selected through a competitive application process.
