Sweet Science Series – Onondaga Lake Cleanup And Tour Of The Onondaga Lake Visitors Center

Please Note there will be some construction in the parking lot.

The Central NY community has played a key role in the efforts to clean up Onondaga Lake. The Onondaga Lake Visitors Center was built to provide the public with access to the significant work taking place by hundreds of scientists, engineers, and skilled craft laborers from this region. From significant improvements in water quality, to the return of native plants and animals, you will see the progress being made to restore the natural beauty and habitat of Onondaga Lake.


People interested in learning more about the Onondaga Lake cleanup are invited to attend the free Sweet Science Series presentation on Tuesday, September 17th, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Onondaga Lake Visitors Center, 280 Restoration Way, Syracuse NY 13209. Admission is free and open to the public. Light snacks will be served at 5:30pm. Walk-ins are welcome, but we ask that people RSVP to sweet.science@tacny.org by September 15th.

Presenter Information

Craig Milburn is Managing Partner at Brown & Sanford Consulting and serves Honeywell as Program Manager of Communications and Government Affairs on the Onondaga Lake project. His main responsibilities include developing and implementing strategy for communication activities, charitable programs, and government affairs. He works closely with community members on the Onondaga Lake Citizen Participation Working Group, local stakeholders and government officials to keep them apprised of the progress with the lake cleanup. Craig has overseen three community planning projects that gathered community input for future uses of Honeywell-owned land along Onondaga Lake and nearby areas. He’s lived in Central New York since 1994 and is a 2007 graduate of Leadership Greater Syracuse.

TACNY John Edson Sweet Lectures, a program founded in 1913, is now called the Sweet Science Series and features discussions about topics in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in an informal atmosphere for adults of all levels of technical understanding. A minimum of six free and open to the public presentations are held each year.

This in from the TACNY email list about a great summer opportunity at The MOST for students starting 9th grade this fall.

Students graduating 8th grade can learn about
environmental science by conducting field experiments

If you have a child who’s entering ninth grade in the fall, The MOST has the perfect camp to keep them thinking this summer: Honeywell Summer Science Week.

Students spend July 10-14 out in the field conducting real scientific research as they learn about factors that stress the Onondaga Lake watershed. They also learn what Honeywell has done to clean up the lake, which was once considered the most polluted lake in the country. Then students come back for a day July 19 to discuss their research and present what they learned.

Best of all, thanks to the generous sponsorship from Honeywell, the camp is FREE to participants!

Diana Wolgemuth will discuss tips for preparing powerful public presentations.

Those interested in learning more about public speaking are invited to attend the free TACNY John Edson Sweet Lecture on Tuesday, February 10, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Onondaga Community College. Walk-ins are welcome, but we ask that people RSVP by emailing sweet.lecture@tacny.org by February 6, 2015.

Presenter:

3d66efaDiana Wolgemuth is the Director of Professional Development for Dale Carnegie of CNY. She joined the company in February 2009. Diana has received several awards with Dale Carnegie including Silver Award Recipient for 4 consecutive years for Top Sales Growth and consistent independent production of over $300,000.00 in her first year as well as in 2011 & 2012, and she achieved $422,000.00 in sales in 2013.

Prior to joining Dale Carnegie, Diana was employed as the Learning and Development Manager at Hand Held Products (known today as Honeywell) in Skaneateles for 7 years. She also worked in a variety of capacities at Welch Allyn. Diana has delivered programs for TACNY, IEEE, ACEC, NSBE at SU, Rotary Clubs in Syracuse and Utica, PMI Chapters in Syracuse and Binghamton, Career Connections in Syracuse as well as for the Youth Group/eCuse for CNY Works programs. She is a past President of the Board of Directors for the CNY Chapter of American Society of Training and Development, and currently serves as the Executive Vice-Chair for CNY Works Board of Directors.

Diana makes her home in Baldwinsville with her husband, Mark. Their 22 year old twins, Amanda and Zachary, recently graduated from college and are now pursuing their professional careers.

John McAuliffe, Honeywell Program Director for the Onondaga Lake Cleanup, will present Technology for the Onondaga Lake Cleanup, a talk about the multiple technologies used as part of the Onondaga Lake Cleanup Program.

People interested in learning more about the Onondaga Lake Cleanup technologies are invited to attend the free TACNY Sweet Lecture presentation on Tuesday, February 12, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Room 101 of the Whitney Applied Technology Center on the Onondaga Community College campus. Networking starts at 5:30 p.m., the speaker is introduced at 6 p.m., the presentation is slated to run from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and the event ends at 8 p.m. following questions from the audience. Admission is free and open to the public. Walk-ins are welcome, but we ask that people RSVP by emailing sweet.lecture@tacny.org by February 7, 2013.

John McAuliffe, P.E., is Honeywell’s Syracuse Program Director with responsibility for Honeywell activities being conducted for Onondaga Lake and associated sites and former Allied Signal properties. Special interests include the areas of environmental stewardship, and green remediation. John is a STEM advocate, supporting programs such as the MOST developed Honeywell Summer Science Week which has provided unique learning opportunities to help excite and inspire a new generation of scientists in Central New York.

John is a lifelong resident of Central New York with over 30 years of experience in environmental remediation and construction. He began his career as an Environmental Engineer with the consulting firm of O’Brien & Gere in Syracuse, NY. Subsequently, he was with Parsons in Liverpool, NY, as Vice President and NY Operations Manager. He has been with Honeywell for over 10 years. McAuliffe is a Registered Professional Engineer and earned both a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering and a Masters Degree in Environmental Engineering at Clarkson University
