Jump in with both feet and take a plunge down deep with Mrs. Loy as she explores shipwrecks and other ocean floor obstacles while updating our country’s coastal maps. Learn about the research ship R/V Rainier located in Kodiak Island, Alaska as it views the ocean floor and completes Hydrographic surveys. Attendees will practice reading coastal charts and engage in other interesting ocean activities.

Rebecca Loy is a graduate of OCC, SUNY Cortland and St. Thomas Aquinas College. While she loves her job, her true passion is space education and teaching STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) activities! Mrs. Loy has traveled to Alaska with the Teacher at Sea program, attended Honeywell’s Space Camp and Advanced Space Academy for Educators, and has taken VIP tours of NASA including Space Shuttles Atlantis, Discovery, and Endeavor. She is often found showing off her Space Academy Blue Flight Suit! Mrs. Loy enthusiastically leads a local Space & Rocket Club and Lego Robotics Team, and has initiated trips to Washington, DC and Space Camp Canada. Mrs. Loy has been published in NY Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (NYASCD), has written curriculum for NASA and paired mentors from NASA Marshall Space Flight Center with local students. Mrs. Loy received the TACNY Outstanding Teacher Award, several robotics/rocketry mentoring awards and the Space Academy Right Stuff award. When Mrs. Loy is not seeking educational opportunities, she is most likely participating in escapades such as jumping off mountains and swimming with great white sharks in Africa, traveling the countryside of Europe or star gazing in Death Valley. In her free time, Mrs. Loy enjoys special time with her loving family as well as reading, painting, gardening and a variety of do-it-yourself projects. She never stops seeking new adventures to inspire both adults and children!
TACNY Junior Cafe Scientifique
TACNY Junior Cafe Scientifique, a program for middle-school students founded in 2005, features discussions between scientists and students about topics in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in an informal atmosphere and seeks to encourage students to consider careers in these areas. Students must be accompanied by an adult and can explore the MOST at no cost after the event.
